I was going to begin this blog with the following, with apologies to Jane Austen:
"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a stomach in need of comfort must be in want of a pie."
Further research unearthed a much more appropriate and accurate Austen quote that asked for no apology:
"Good apple pies are a considerable part of our domestic happiness."
Our journey and fascination began as girls in need of some "domestic happiness". I was watching the Austin Daytripper. The host was eating in a small cafe in Bastrop, TX. After his meal, he ordered a slice of pie. He said that Maxine's makes their own crusts in house - unusually so! Then the most beautiful cream pie came out. Work of art. I had to have one. I also knew Mindy had to come with me.
After a little rescheduling, we were on our way to Maxine's on Main. Maxine's is genuine country charm and delicious country cooking on, you guessed it, Main St. The food was good and not really good for you - unless you count comfort factor. Then pie.
OMG the pie.
Maxine's carries decadent cream or meringue pies that must come daily from heaven. We were so full from country food that we were unable to finish even one slice each. I hate to say if this is a good thing or a bad thing. On one hand, they were so good - I didn't want to stop eating.
On the other hand, more for later!
We escaped, to-go containers in hand, food-babies in belly, and smiles on faces. We'd be back a couple of weeks later, craving the rich wedge of Americana, only 30 miles away from home.
